ESF to take part in TRIALOG Development Education Partnership Fair in Vienna


ESF joins the Development Education Fair organized by TRIALOG, a project that strengthens civil society and raises awareness of development issues in the enlarged EU. The partnership fair is a learning, networking and project-designing event, gathering more than 150 participants mainly from development CSOs from across Europe coming from different sectors (development education, human rights, environment, gender etc).

Education without Borders-Educación Sin Fronteras (ESF) is a non-profit non-governmental organization (NGO) focused on social development through education.

Since our foundation in 1988, ESF has been based internationally and independently of any government or religion, in solidarity with the disenfranchised and marginalized populations of the world.

Our purpose as an NGO focused on development is to be a vehicle for an active and organized civil society dedicated to establishing education in impoverished countries.

ESF was created as a source of reflection and analysis on the educational problems prevalent in different communities around the world.  We consist primarily of education professionals and people in related disciplines who reject the actual "status quo" and actively participate in the enormous task of working for a more just world, guided by the values of equality, democracy, and respect for diversity.


Letter of Principles

The problems of the education system include inequality clouding the principle of equal opportunity, the marginalization of women, the disregard for and perpetuation of unfair trade, and a lack of respect for the environment. These are the primary factors driving the work we do and the principles that guide us. 
To achieve this, we at ESFstrongly believe in EducationEducation, understood as integral, participative, and community development. Under this premise, we consider education:

A Basic Need:more than a means of survival, that which sets us apart as human beings is active cultural participation, which can only be fullyrealized through education.

An essential right: as is written in the Declaration of Universal Human Rights (1948) and in the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, education is not a privilege, but a right we have as human beings.Everyone has the right to an education, along with the opportunities it provides, without discrimination.

The key to development: education contributes decisively to the pleople' s welfare and provides access to the technical knowledge they can use to better themselves and their communities. Access to technology encourages community participation, the defence of both individual and collective rights, and an increase in the overall quality of life, which in turn reduces the dependence of these communities on negative sources of power.

Our Mission

Education without Borders is an NGO with a focus on human rights. Along with international cooperation, we contribute to education to promote justice and solidarity  in the world, and the realization that action is necessary to bring about change in our society.

Education without Borders has a vision to be a landmark organization in its commitment to defending and promoting the idea of a quality education for all as a fundamental human right.ESF understands education as the vehicle for personal and community transformation and development, creating a type of equal and participative relations without discrimination, and the construction of a world in whichthese opportunities are available to all people.

International Cooperation

The International Cooperation sector of ESF works with the aim of increasing awareness of, and solidarity in, developing countries. Through this department, we channel financial, material, and technical resources to these people to assist withthe development of autonomy, democracy, and respect for the environment through an understanding of the optimization of local resources, including grassroots organizations. 

Specifics objectives

To contribute to the establishment of educational agencies.
To collaborate in the evolution and establishment of educationalconditions in the countries where we work.
To provide technical, material, and volunteer assistance to improve teaching conditions and access to education.
To support curricular changes that work best to match the education with the needs and culture of the local community.
To provide incentives for public institutions in the countries we work with to assume the responsibilities they have to their citizens. 
To improve the capacity and organization of local communities.
To contribute to the development of and respect for cultural andlinguistic diversity
To support action toward gender equality.
Our cooperation must lend its support to comprehensive, universal programs which connect actions at the micro level to those at the macro level, based on an understanding of the  work we do.

Our Actions

They will contribute to the social structure of the collectives and populations we work with.
They must be designed and developed for medium-long term application.
They will be concrete and feasible responses to a clearly identified problem, and the result of the collaborative planning process of: beneficiarise, counterparts, and Educación Sin Fronteras, which will moderate horizontal relations between parts.

They must secure the viability of the project following the establishment of external economic and technical assistance. As a general principle, ESF serves wherever our services are needed and requested, taking into consideration the immediate circumstances of the beneficiaries and the possibility of resolving their problems.  The concentration of our participation in Latin America is due to the historical, cultural, and linguistic proximity; the quickness with which cooperative relations are established, the cumulative experience and the good preparation of many of the local development-NGOs.

Development Education:


  • WE OFFER TOOLS FOR TEACHERS We d evel op materials and activities for education professionals.
  • WE RAISE AWARENESS IN SOCIETY OF ACTIONS THAT ARE NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE A MORE JUST WORLD. We organize and participate in citizen campaigns that promote a more just society.
  • ADVOCACY. We influence public decision-making agents in the social, economic,and political spheres that impact the developing countries we work with.

    This area focuses its attention on development education, understood as an educational process that facilitates an understanding of the relationship between the North and the South, promoting values of solidarity and social justice, and acting to find an equal and sustainable path of worldwide socialdevelopment. We work with the aim of promoting a more equal, just and united Spanish society, which actively contributes to the elimination of inequalities and the imbalance of the relationship between the North and the South.  We intend to spread awareness of the problems that exist in the societies we work with in order to promote changes in attitudes, behaviors, and the values from which they are derived, based on the need toreflect critically on the global status that perpetuates a system of small pockets of concentrated wealth against a vast population living in poverty.

    To achieve our goals, the department of educational development works to strengthen the following:

    Formal and Informal Education

    We intend to incorporate information regarding the imbalance of Northern-Southern relations taught in the Spanish education system to integrate  education dynamics which promote changes in attitudes and ideas.  In turn, they can take these concepts of commonality and justice among individuals and share them with their communities. It is through this method that we establish a connection between the content of educational development and the practice of professional teaching. 


    From our experience with international cooperation in the countries of the South, we have been able to inform Spanish society about this dynamic, raising awareness about structural causes of underdevelopment, especially those related to the responsibilities of the developed world, and how they affect both the North and the South.  


    We want to influence the political powers through the organization, participation in political pressure campaigns, and other NGOs with similar goals to those of ESF. Education for DevelopmentEducation for DevelopmentFor the execution of these activities, we mobilize Territorial Groups comprised of volunteers committed to the mission of ESF,  who are active in various autonomous regions and cities in Spain.
